Audio/Digital Media Engineering
Over the past decade digital technology and computing have revolutionised the music and entertainment industries. Media Engineering is a new range of degree programmes developed in response to industry demand for graduate engineers with the skills to develop digital technologies for audio-visual content production and delivery.
Students will receive an integrated training in digital electronics and computing with an understanding of their application in the latest technologies for audio-visual processing in music, film, broadcast, games and the web. Media Engineering offers a unique combination of modern digital systems engineering with the latest industry technologies for music, audio, video and computer graphics production.
Degree programmes operate on a modular system with either 4-year MEng or 3-year BEng, and the option of a professional placement year.
Entry requirements
Standard entry requirements are AAB at 'A' level for MEng and BBB at 'A' level for BEng or equivalent.
Mathematics is required at full 'A' level or the equivalent for both programmes.
Audio Media Engineering
Audio Media Engineering combines modern digital audio technology with software and hardware development. It aims at those students wishing to make a career designing audio technologies for music production, game industry, broadcasting, and web development. The focus of the programme is audio engineering for future multimedia systems.
Digital Media Engineering
Digital Media Engineering integrates training in software and hardware technologies for audio-visual content production, delivery and display and is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the entertainment or consumer electronics industries, from film and broadcast through to game development and multimedia system design.
Degree programmes operate on a modular system with either 4-year MEng or 3-year BEng, and the option of an professional placement year.
Audio-Visual Media Laboratories
Purpose-built Media Laboratories providing access to:
- Audio-visual broadcast production studio.
- Sound-proofed audio recording and production suites.
- Audio and video capture, processing and test facilities.
- Industry standard audio-visual production tools (audio, video and graphics)
The University of Surrey has state-of-the-art facilities for digital content production including a unique multiple-camera HD broadcast studio using the latest high-definition digital television used in film production and real-time human motion capture for animation. The Visual Media Research Group has an international reputation for leading edge research in visual content production. In addition to research activities in the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and the Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR) , the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR) hosts the I-Lab which is an immersive multimedia environment with one of Europe's largest surround-sound systems.
Audio-visual facilities also include a broadcast picture-quality assessment suite.
Industry standard tools for audio-visual production and post-production include animation packages, professional audio and video editing suites and games development platforms.

Careers in Media Engineering
Graduates from both programmes will be fully accredited engineers (subject to IET accreditation) with advanced skills in digital media hardware and software together with an understanding of how these systems can be used creatively for audio-visual content production.
Media Engineering offers excellent employment prospects in a diverse range of media-related industries. The School of Electronics and Physical Sciences has an excellent track record for graduate employment, with over 99 per cent employment in previous years.
The UK is a world leader in the media production industries with film post-production and games development recognised internationally and second only in size to the US. London and the South East have the highest UK concentration of media-related companies including music production, broadcast, film post-production, games development and major international consumer electronics companies. Audio and Digital Media programmes are designed to satisfy the increasing demand for highly skilled creative engineers both in the UK and internationally.
