Space Related Courses at Surrey
The University of Surrey offers course at undergraduate and postgraduate level with space related modules taught by members of academic staff at the Surrey Space Centre. The undergraduate pathways can either be through the department of Electronic Engineering or through the Physics department.
In the Electronic Engineering department we offer an MEng pathway in Electronics with Satellite Engineering (UCAS code H621). This is a 4 or 5 year pathway with an optional industrial placement year.
In the Physics department we offer an MPhys pathway in Physics with Satellite Engineering (UCAS code F362). This is a 3 or 4 year course with optional placement year.
For more details of these courses and other undergraduate pathways offerred by the University of Surrey visit the Undergraduate Study page of the University website.
Launch of New Degree Courses in
Space Technology & Planetary Exploration
Surrey University is introducing new MSc and BEng/MEng degree programmes starting in September 2005. These new courses will provide students with an opportunity to learn from the practical experience gained at the Surrey Space Centre.
The Surrey Space Centre has a unique position world-wide, with a sustained programme of building complete satellites, performing mission planning, working with international launch agencies and providing in-orbit operations. These new courses allow students to develop practical training in planning space missions and understanding the influence of mission objectives on spacecraft design.
The undergraduate courses will introduce students to the history of space exploration, introduce the industry standard tools for mission design and explain the fundamental principles of satellite operations. The programme culminates in a multi-disciplinary project where students on the course have to design a mission for a palm-sized satellite. Some students will be responsible for developing and testing subsystems, others the mission objectives and onboard processing.
The MSc programme expands upon the foundation of a good science degree and is open to students from Physics, Maths or Engineering degrees. The course introduces students to more technical aspects of mounting a space mission and allows students to see the workings of a commercially succesful company at first hand. The University has strong links with the European Space Agency through which students get insight of how a major space agency operates.
For more details of these new courses follow the links below or see under the Courses menu.
Within the Electronics department we offer a pathway in Satellite Communications Engineering . This course specialises in aspects of spacecraft design and control as well as their application to communications.
You can also take many space related modules through the Mobile and Satellite Communications pathway.
