Research Activities
The research has been
in 4 main areas:
1. Microwave photonics
2. System-in-package technology
3. Communications transceivers
4. Novel devices
(1) This was a key activity
from the grants rolled into the portfolio and this work will continue
until December 2004 to fulfil our commitments to the collaborating
parties (Leeds and Sheffield) in the project. The work has focussed
on travelling-wave phototransistors in InP technology. Our contribution
has been in the modelling and characterisation of the devices. The
design of a second mask-set containing the layouts of a wide variety
of new improved structures has been completed recently.
(2) A multilayer MCM
process has been established in the ATI using photoimageable thick-film
technology. A variety of passive components has been demonstrated
up to 110 GHz. A design for an integrated receiver at 60 GHz has
been sent for mask fabrication. The process will be able to be used
in the work to construct an UWB transceiver demonstrator in collaboration
with CCSR.
(3) Work has concentrated
on the generation of OFDM signals using the LINC technique. OFDM
is highly suited to the realisation of PAN type networks due to
its resilience to multipath effects.
(4) Collaboration has
started on characterising and optimising the amorphous carbon RTD
devices.
